Northern Rounds: Poetry from Seasons of Life in the North is a varied collection that engages the reader with a deep love of place. This poetry gives voice to the experience of living in a land apart. Endless summer days, golden autumn walks, new-fallen snow give way to long winter nights and the isolation that comes with distance. So, too, are found the aspects of life being lived: first steps, letting go, coming of age. Faith in tomorrow pervades the work, linking seasons of the North with the seasons of our lives.
Silent pond it is not really,
for a loon does nest with mate.
And maybe they will call out,
call out if we but wait.
Faithful birds forever mated,
always free yet still true,
after all these years of dreaming,
they’ll be calling me to you.

On The Yukon
Pulling in the net,
he could tell their weight,
the tug of one alive.
"How many Father?"
he asked again.
Another pull and the first was over,
on the floor of the wooden skiff.
And not just a fish,
but the first king salmon
of the season.
On the great river,
Father paused, a special moment.
"It is not how many,
nor how big.
Only the river
knows what is given,
and always,
it is enough."
