Baby Wolf

A Warrior's Tale

Many years ago, before modern civilization touched what is now the north coast of America, there were native tribes that lived, traded, loved and fought. Many successful tribes were known for their carving skills, others for their craftsmanship and weaving, but the most prestigious of tribes were always known for their greatest asset, which was their fighting ability and the art of warfare, and so begins the tale of Baby Wolf. Baby Wolf is a warrior without peer and in his own selfish viewpoint, has but one weakness: his family. As the story unfolds, you will see how the trials and tribulations the warrior faces affect his misguided views, and how ultimately the love of his wife and the birth of his daughter send him down the path to redemption, teaching the warrior that family is not a weakness, but is, in fact, his greatest strength. Baby Wolf is a heartfelt tale told in poetic form and will teach its readers that, although our path in life may vary at times, what is inside your heart is what truly determines your destination.

About the Author and Illustrator

Victor Davis

Victor Davis was born and raised in Petersburg, Alaska, and is a proud member of the Shangukeidi clan. He currently resides in Anchorage, Alaska, with his wife Yabba.

"The story of Baby Wolf is told from my life experiences, good and bad, a diary so to speak. Naturally, some of the story is embellished a bit, but remains true to its origins. What you may find interesting is this—some of the story's most extraordinary events represent things that have actually taken place in my life, while other ordinary events, simply represent my hopes and dreams. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!"

From the Book

My armor, shield and blade
are known throughout,
their effectiveness in battle
never in doubt.
I know I made them
with my hands,
but they do not come
from these lands.

A gift from my mother
a desperate attempt to save me
I wonder if she regrets that
and how gravely.

As we load the canoes
and prepare,
a voice—
my weakness—
catches me unaware.

"Baby Wolf!"
my Butterfly said with a cry,
"Don't you dare leave
without saying good bye!"
I hold my wife close,
she holds back her tears,
I do my best to calm her fears.
