Jim Glenn
The Longshoreman

Jim Glenn is an well-known Alaskan longshoreman, philosopher and poet. He arrived in Alaska one week before the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964, and Alaska hasn't been the same since. Jim Glenn's first book is a book of poetry interspersed with narrative of his philosophy of life which took form and substance by his struggles and recovery (renewed each and every day) from alcohol abuse. He writes from personal experience and bears witness to the value of the AA message.

From The Introduction

"My name is James Albert Glenn. I was born on May 12th, 1945 exactly 30 days after Roosevelt passed on. The day I was born, the flags were raised from half mast. I feel that even that had some meaning with regards to my destiny. I think that the times in which a person is born has a bearing on his life.

World War II had just ended; people were happy. Roosevelt died and people were sad. I was born a manic-depressive. See the connection? Of course, I didn't know it at the time. It wasn't revealed to me until I was 35 years old. I denied it until I was 45, and at 48 I went nuts and saw a doctor.

He put me on Lithium and I couldn't function at all. I asked him how long I had to be on it. He said "Forever." I said, "Go to hell!" then threw my pills away and got drunk. I had been sober and working the program of AA for eight years. Finally the Lithium left my system and I had a spiritual awakening, revealing many things and the fact that Jesus is Lord, even though I've never been baptized or a Christian.

My church is AA. That's where I found God and myself. Nuff said."

Jim Glenn joined the Teamsters in 1971 and has been a Longshoreman since 1974.

Excerpts from:

Tidal Wave

WHEN THE CANDLE GOES OUT

Oh, God! What do I do when the candle goes out?
Do I scream? Do I shout?
God, you can do anything, why don't you light it?
Why don't you light it?

God answered,
My child, I gave you life as a gift to be lived.
Although I adore you, I can't live it for you.
As a matter of fact, I want it back -
That is why I gave you the gift of time.
I'm not going to tell you how much time I gave you
That's the game of love I play with my children.

What kind of child are you going to be?
Are you going to be stingy with my gifts
And keep them all to yourself?
I guess when you get something for nothing,
You don't appreciate it.

Some of my children don't even know
That I gave my only Son to teach you about my gifts
And how to share with your brothers and sisters.

Now back to the candle - I won't light it for you,
Because the truth is the candle never goes out.
The flame is hiding in the match.
It's your turn.

THE VIOLIN

Life is like a violin with many strings. To make corrections, we must stop playing whatever tune we have been playing. We must replace the old sheet music of vice with the new one of virtue. The strings that shriek the loudest, way out of tune, must be dealt with first.

We must not bear down too hard with the bow of action. But ever so gently lay it on the cat gut of the issue. Then boldly go forth in the right direction, withdrawing the action to get enjoyment from the new tune we are playing.

The sheet music contains the notes of the master musicians that we must discipline ourselves to follow. Remembering the Great Conductor of all with His magic wand of existence keeps this harmony in proper tune. For His glory and His grace.
