The contribution of the United States Army to overseas contingency operations is a multifaceted effort that requires unrelenting effort, not only on foreign battlefields, but also back at the home stations where soldiers train and their families are supported. About the Author

Dusty Finley was born in 1954 and was raised in America's Heartland where he claims hometowns of Ames, Iowa; Harlan, Iowa; Salina, Kansas; Springfield, Missouri; and Rogers, Arkansas. He graduated from Kemper Military and Junior College in Boonville, Missouri, in 1973 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1977.

Dusty then served as an Infantry officer in the United States Army for the next 21 years, retiring from active duty in 1998. Highlights of his military career include serving as a company commander in the 82d Airborne Division, advising the 1st Battalion (Scout), 297th Infantry in western Alaska, and helping to reorganize the Alaska Army National Guard following the end of the Cold War. Dusty continues his service today as a Department of the Army Civilian with the United States Army Alaska where he supports the Army Force generation process as supervisory Strategic Planner.

While he makes little claim to original thought, Dusty relishes any opportunity to collect and share anecdotes from the people with whom he interacts. This personal journal manifests itself as a potpourri of experiences, observations, thoughts, quotes, photographs, and information that capture the essence of the time that he served with the U.S. Army in Heidelberg, Germany, between December 2005 and January 2008. This is not so much a story of individual accomplishment as it is a testimonial to how good people who share professional values and personal friendships can achieve success.
