Many moons passed before we got our cabin in the woods turned into a working lodge. My time spent on the Yentna River and building Rebel's Roost Lodge, which has been under new ownership since 1997, was a great time—demanding at times and lonely a lot of the time. Sometimes I questioned my sanity, but it was such a great experience that I would have never gotten anywhere else.

Alaska
by Lucille Heater
Have you ever gone tripping over the snow
When the temperature is minus 25 below?
The moon is full and bright as day—
This is Alaska. Let's keep it that way.
Unspoiled, untouched, let the moose roam—
Alaska, this is their home.
Now we watch the snow as it softly falls,
And sometimes listen as the coyote call.
Fog rising over the frozen river on a cold February eve,
The sunset streaks across the sky like a woven weave.
A moose, meandering down the river trail,
So bold, so big, moving his head from side to side
Searching for tree buds on the riverbanks so wide.
The chickadees are gone, full for the day.
Come morning they will be here again, also the grey jays.
The coyote is singing way up in the slough,
Winter is here—there is so much to do.
God gave us another beautiful day.
All things around us: the sky, the snow, the moose,
The coyote and the birds, all creatures of God.
It's very hard to put into words.
The temperature is at a minus 25 degree,
Dusk is upon us, it's hard to see.
